Not every body responds to light the same way.
A 2024 meta-analysis pooled thirty-four randomized controlled trials on pre-exercise photobiomodulation — light applied before training, not after. The pattern that emerged was not the straight line the industry usually sells.
Sedentary men starting from zero saw moderate to large improvements in muscle endurance and recovery. Competitive athletes, at the other end of the spectrum, saw the same. The men in between — recreationally trained, already lifting three or four times a week — saw close to nothing.
The researchers' explanation is mechanical, not mystical. Regular resistance training changes muscle fibre composition. Fibres adapt. The same wavelength that meaningfully shifts an unconditioned or highly specialised system barely registers against tissue that has already remodelled itself around the training load.
This matters because most red light marketing treats every man as the same body. He is not. Where you sit on that curve — new to training, deep into a competitive cycle, or comfortably mid-pack — changes what a pre-session dose is actually likely to do for you.
